Controlling the Self-Assembled Nanoarchitectures of Bimetallic Pt/Au Nanocatalysts on H2O/Au(111).
The formation of nanostructures with unique geometries and morphologies plays a critical role in the catalysis of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, the formation and the subsequent evolution of the nanopatterns of Pt/Au bimetallic nanocatalysts on H2O/Au(111) were examined in real time using in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Three size-controlled nanopatterns were observed with different geometric configurations and specific surface areas. The observations of the catalysts with isolated Pt atoms, isolated Au atoms, and Au clusters at the Au(111) surface revealed a preferential attachment of Au atoms and clusters to Au atoms as the nucleation sites on the H2O-covered Au(111) surface.
